A Must-Have for Harmony Remote Owners 5 out of 5

Summary -- If you own a Harmony 880, you should snap this up now while it's still available. Eventually, you will need it.

A few years ago, I had to decide between replacing my very expensive A/V receiver -- which still works fine but doesn't have HDMI ports -- or finding a way to control multiple devices using a single button click using macros of some kind. It had to be friendly or the wife would kill me. The Logitech Harmony 880 fit the bill perfectly. It was not cheap at two bills, but it's simple, attractive, and very capable. Logitech even supplied codes for my now 14-year-old laserdisc player! I love the 880.

However, about 18 months later, it just stopped charging the battery, which by the way is propretary -- you won't find them at the local drug store. A new battery, which is almost 25% the cost of a new remote, did not fix the problem. Somehow, even though pampered, the remote just stops talking to the base. I don't understand it but as you can read from other reviews here, it seems to happen to a lot of people. Logitech support never got back to me about this.

Normally I refuse to support a company that sells me a product that dies and then will not talk to me, but I love this remote so much that I eventually broke down and bought another. It was obvious to me that they slightly redesigned the base, so I was hopeful that this new one would not degenerate like the first, but two years later -- same exact symptoms. I bought another $40 battery and again it didn't solve the problem. Neither did cleaning the contacts with alchohol or wrapping elastic bands around the remote and base. So at this point I'd spent $500 on these remotes.

Then I noticed this charger and the good reviews, so I took a chance. It arrived two days later, and six hours after that, my battery was charged and my 880 is back in business. This was a life saver. The unit is apparently from China with Chinese writing on it, but a slip of paper in the box explains that the LED indicators are, from right to left, "Power" (red), "Charging" (red), "Fully Charged" (green), and "N/A" (yellow). No idea what that last light is for but the sheet says it doesn't apply for this battery type. On my unit, the green light seems to not be working, actually, but I can tell the battery is charged because the second LED goes out, and popping the battery into the 880 shows a full charge and the unit works again. So I'm not concerned with the possibly defective LED, as far as I'm concerned, this thing has already paid for itself in dollars and points with my family, who rely on the 880 to simplify the overly complicated way that my entertainment center is wired.

I had already bought a brand new battery from Logitech (so now I have a spare), but if you need one, it appears that this same vendor also sells a version of this charger here with a battery included for less than the cost of a new battery from Logitech. Hopefully Logitech will eventually either fix this problem or bundle a charger of their own, but for now, this unit is the answer.

Highly recommended.

Well worth it 5 out of 5

This charger works like a charm and is more convenient than the docking charger you receive with the Logitech Harmony Remote. No complaints here!

Does the job just fine 5 out of 5

This listing is for the cradle only as advertised. I had read a lot about these series of harmony remotes having troubles with the charging cradles and mine was no exception. It turned out there was also a bulge in the battery that came with my remote so I needed the battery too. The charger has flip-out prongs to plug into your power outlet, there were no instructions that came with mine and the lights are all in some far-east language. Basically, you just flip the battery out of your remote, slide it in the charger with contacts from the battery lining up with the contacts for the charger, and plug it in. If the battery is low there will be a single or double red light.. when it is charged the green light will light up. It doesn't take that long to charge either which is a plus. Pretty simple.

A widget that actually works! 5 out of 5

If you own a Logitech Harmony remote it's likely that you've experienced the frustration of their poorly designed cradle charger. The remote is incredible, but I've owned 3 of them and every one of them eventually has problems with the contacts of the remote making contact with the contacts on the base to charge the unit. This charger couldn't be much more simple in it's design, but to my delight does a great job recharging the batteries. It's not as convenient as just laying the remote on the cradle as it was designed, but if you buy a spare battery also, the swap out takes seconds and it seems to be effective so far. It's not much bigger than the battery itself so it also has a small and non-cumbersome footprint.
