  • Donning the armour of the Overlord, players become commander-in-chief of a fighting, thieving and pillaging horde of crazed minions
  • Controlling the minions is slick and devastating, requiring a flick of the Wii Remote to send the raucous rabble into battle
  • Individual Minions can be plucked from the horde, held by the neck and then, by vigorously shaking the Wii Remote, throttled! This stirs up the volatile lifeforce within them and they become a manic minion missile
  • this exclusive Overlord adventure for Wii tells a new and twisted fairy tale. The lead character is in a Cinderella scenario with his elder and rather unpleasant brother and sister.

Editorial Review

Overlord Dark Legend is a brand new action adventure steeped in fairy tale lore with sinister, satirical twists. Set in a time before the original game (Overlord, 2007), players step into the role of a new younger Overlord and revel in command of the most vicious, yet lovable little critters in gaming ¿ the Minions. Forming a unique rampaging army, the Minions are a demonic, slavish and loyal horde of imp-like critters predisposed to violence. No matter: they¿re always ready and willing to follow even the most suicidal order, whether it's raiding villages for kicks and giggles or hurling themselves at enemies in the face of kamikaze odds in the beautifully rendered game world. With a story and characters that poke playful fun at fantasy cliché, our trainee tyrant will be able to take his growing pains out on the local fairy tale inhabitants as he protects his castle and lands

Maybe not for kids 4 out of 5

I rated this game based on my 10 year old son's opinion. My son loves it, but my DH has banned him from playing it. Why? Because there is cursing in it and the intro to it tells you how you will be a great evil person and love killing and smashing things. "Evil always finds a way". Now, this did not bother me as much as my husband. But then I saw AND heard the cursing (the written lines are said outloud). My kids don't watch stuff above PG and they don't hear us cursing. So, that kind of thing makes a difference to us. If you are interested in this game, please take note of those two items. We had never heard of the Overlord series and I bought this purely based on kpurple2's opinion (So, I didn't know about it's theme and most reviews just said that it was just like the other games without defining what the other games were like). After playing it, I did not find that review as "conservative" as she made it sound.

I think the game is cute/silly and easy (which is why my son loves it). And I don't even mind the violence (mostly smashing things right now...he is not very far along). But, it did bore me...same things over and over again. Will we let him play it again? Probably. But, I wanted to put my two cents in about why it might not be appropriate for younger players.

What happened to the rest of it????? 2 out of 5

This game is fun. Very fun actually.... but as soon as you get all your minions and are really ready to begin it's over. I finished this game thinking, "What a worthless waste of time. What a waste of money!" I'm rather bitter I even bought it. Definitely rent it before buying - you'll see what I mean. Over before it begins. Did the designers get bored or something? There is no point in buying this game. I feel like it's part 1 and game part 2 was missing from the package.

Not so Great... 3 out of 5

I had high hopes for this game. I had heard how good Overlord was on the Xbox, and bought this with that in mind. I knew they were different games, but thought I would be getting something similar. Unfortunately, it's much different.

In the other game, as I understand it, you can choose your path and decide how evil you want to be. Not so in this game. Here, you are "told" over and over how evil your guy is. But it never shows. You don't actually DO anything evil at all. Ever. I don't mind that much, but it seems really misleading.

The game is completely linear. There are no decisions to be made whatsoever. Just go here and do this, then go there and do that. It is a very short game as well, but I didn't mind, because the game is so repetitive. You will soon figure out that 90% of the game consists of just running around smashing everything. That's fun in a mindless way I guess, but gets old after a while.

You can buy armor and upgrades, but it is a bit of a joke what choices you have. There's really no choice at all. I wanted a deep RPG that I could really sink my teeth into. That's not what this game is. It requires virtually no brainpower whatsoever. I'd say it's a good game for kids, but if you're an adult gamer, your money would be better invested somewhere else.

I don't regret having bought it, but in the end, it just didn't deliver the goods. I'd give it 2-1/2 stars.

The game spends a lot of time educating you on how to use "Waypoint Markers" and the finer points of throttling minions. I saw no reason to use either 99% of the time. They're way more trouble than they are worth.

It seemed to have a lot of potential, but just never quite got there. Some people have noted that the story is "hilarious". It had a few funny moments, but I'd hardly call it hilarious, unless you are 5 years old.

One part I did like though was the peasant women who talked like rednecks. I couldn't help but laugh when I heard, "What's Gerda doin', hanging around them dwarves? Ain't we got any good men around here?" and "The way you cut down them plants, oooh! I was all acquiver!" Sounds a lot funnier when you actually hear it :)

PROS:

Nice Graphics
Okay story
Fairly fun (at first)
Simple, Mindless

CONS:

Completely Linear
Repetitive
Glitch makes it freeze sometimes
No Replay value whatsoever
Simple, Mindless

In short, it's a kid's game. If you have a kid who likes fantasy, Shrek-style fairy tale parody stories, this would be a good choice. But if you are an adult Wii-owner looking for a deeper experience, don't buy this. I'd recommend the "Metroid Prime Trilogy" or "The Conduit" instead.

Different and fun, but very short gameplay 3 out of 5

This game really is a lot of fun if you have a good sense of humor. It's amusing to watch your minions hand you things saying "For the Overlord" and "For You, Master". Or picking something up, putting it on their head, dancing and saying, "For Me" or "That's Mine".

Essentially you're the Evil Overlord with a bunch of rat-like minions. While you can destroy things yourself, you usually order your minions to do it for you while your character stands nearby and watches.

Game play is relatively simple, even newbies should be able to master it quite quickly.

However, gameplay is really short. My daughter and I both completed it in only 2 days. I have no doubt that it could be completed in just one day. This was really the only disappointing thing about the game.

While I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't like the violence (For example, you can hold a minion and thunk it in the head to gain its lifeforce), it really didn't bother us as we know that it's just a game and not to be taken seriously. If you take it for what it is, a goofy game with weird destructive characters, then you'll enjoy it. If you can't do that, then you'll want to pass on this one.

Way too short. 2 out of 5

I love the Overlord games. I was really excited to get one for the Wii because the PC version was giving me fits.

The game play is great, the story line is hilarious, the duration of the game is WAY TOO SHORT!

I beat this game in a few hours, even doing almost all of the side quests, what a bummer, I really wish I would have just rented it.

I definitely would recommend people playing this game, but rent or borrow it, its too expensive to buy for how little game play you get out of it.
