Mushroom Men: Rise of the Fungi on Nintendo DS is the prequel to Mushroom Men: Spore Wars on Wii. Play both to get the complete story! Mushroom Men gives players the opportunity to jump into the fantastic microcosm that is the backyard battlefield. Take control of the crusade, creating devastating weapons from everyday items and teaming up with other sentient plant forms that'll leave the enemy sliced and diced. Let the stylus be your rapier and the Wii Remote your bazooka as you cut down the multitude of household pests that threaten our very existence! Mushroom Men inhabit the world that goes on while we humans are looking the other way, in the twilight hours when we sleep. We tower above them and go about our business completely unaware of the war waged at our feet. After the comet had passed, the scientists concluded that the strange, green dust had no effect on the world. No one noticed that tiny plants and fungi were acting strangely. Mushrooms, cacti, flowers and vines had awakened to full consciousness. Tribes quickly formed, building plant and fungi nations and with nation building… came war! Mushroom Men shows gamers the mundane world from the surreal perspective of a three inch high Mushroom Man. As a brave Bolete Mushroom, players can wreak havoc on their enemies by transforming common household trinkets and trash into weapons and tools.
Not play too much yet 3 out of 5
I just tried and got stacked somewhere then I stopped playing. I may not fan of this kind of game.
Where are the positive reviews coming from? 1 out of 5
After playing most of this game, I really don't understand why there are so many positive reviews here. I'll admit that the good reviews and the cool cover art is what lead me to buy the game. Even when I read G4's negative review, I still thought perhaps this was one of those games that the bigshots reviewed negatively, but that was actually a good game. Sadly, I was mistaken. This game failed to bring much of anything to the table. It's all bad controls, bad gameplay, bad graphics. Just bad. And I normally wouldn't bring up graphics when it comes to gaming. I mean, graphics shouldn't count for a whole lot. But these are really bad. It almost feels like insult to injury in this case. Even being the advanced gamer that I am, I couldn't always tell where I was supposed to go or do. Maybe there are people out there who really do like this game. But I have a feeling that most of these reviews aren't real. I can't see how they could be. My advice? Skip this game.
Mushroom Men is fun 4 out of 5
This game is fun, I was hoping it was for 2 people, but engaging for one. Got stuck in a few rooms, but I guess that is normal, as I"m new to video games.
Good Game for the DSiXL. 4 out of 5
The main complaint I have read about for Mushroom Men: Rise of the Fungi was that the controls were really hard to use. They were hard to use due to the size of the screen from what I've seen. I have only played this game on the DSiXL and due to the larger screen I have not ran into these problems, this allowed me to really engross myself in the game because I was not fighting the controls.
Pros:
Great style- this game has a very unique style that is all on its one.
Good Story- Simple but goes very smoothly.
Good Sound- The music was made by one of the best, Les Claypool.
Weapons- You make your weapons out of random houshold objects.
Price- $5 is hard to beat for this game.
Cons:
Controls- Would be very frustrating on a standard size screen. Works Great on the DSiXL.
Combat- Very basic combat system.
Will play again soon! 4 out of 5
This fun game offers a lot of bang for the buck. The world is visually beautiful and interesting, and the music is great. If I hadn't finished it in only 2 weeks, I would still be playing it at every opportunity. I liked the controls on the Wii, even though I thought at first it would be too simplistic. It is challenging to find all the crystals (the more you find, the harder your mushroom-cap head becomes and the harder you are to kill), but the game is not burdened by impossible or frustrating battles. If you do die, you just reappear a little ways back. Some of the crazed rabbits and other animals were too scary for my 7-year-old, but not as frightening to her as the dark foes at the end of Zelda, and there are no death scenes and cadavers laying around, either. My only gripe with this game is that I wish it were longer and I was still playing it.
