One of the best RPG series of all time 5 out of 5
I don't like American Roleplaying video games. They feel like they have no challenge and you have your hand held from start to finish. [Oblivion, Dragon Age etc]
This is an amazing series that features all the great old school features without the old school bad features. No hand holding here, you have to think a little and it's fairly challenging.
I noticed other reviews talking about not being able to get the game[s] working on Vista/Windows 7. To all those who have this problem I bet it's because you own a nVidia card? If you do research you'll notice that it runs fine on Vista/Windows 7 with ATI cards.
Check the release notes on the 196.34 nVidia drivers you will see they acknowledge the problem. So to summarise: THE PROBLEM IS NOT THE GAME, IT IS A COMBINATION OF LATER NVIDIA DRIVERS AND WINDOWS 7/VISTA
As the owner of a GeForce 9800 GTX card I made a Windows XP dual boot and am playing the Gothic series flawlessly in Windows XP with the lastest Nvidia drivers.
Save your money, Game is broken! 1 out of 5
I was so pysched to have gotten this game set for Christmas and immediately loaded it to play... which is where my problems have begun. I've installed and reinstalled Gothic 1 multiple times now in an attempt to get it to work... but to no avail. I continue to receive an access violation when starting up Gothic 1. You need to be aware that the issues I'm having are VERY VERY common and as of yet, I've not found anywhere on the internet that has a workaround. To top it off, Piranha Bytes is unreachable for support and Dreamcatcher has yet to respond after a week and 2 seperate emails. **EDIT: Dreamcatcher never responded to any of my attempts to reach them. After 4 months, I'm going to assume they have no intention of doing so. Very frustrating because what little I've been able to play of Gothic 2 (the game is almost unplayable due to the insane increase of difficulty with the expansion) I'm sure I would have throughly loved all 3 games.**
So please, PLEASE, before you buy this product, do a search on the web for "Gothic Access Violation" and see how completely common it is to buy a broken game. This is COMPLETELY unexcusable in my opinion and truly hope to save someone else the money that we have wasted on this.
Slightly buggy but awesome 5 out of 5
Yes, they have some bugs but the patches fix them for the most part. Just remember the rpg golden rule(save, save, save your game) and you will be fine.
The games themselves tend to become somewhat addictive and are very detailed and hugely explorable. There are countless things and npc's to interact with and lots of things to learn. You can beat out your own swords on the smiths anvil, cook food, learn alchemy or magic,to name just a few.
Fans of games like Oblivion or the Elder Scrolls will feel right at home playing these beautiful masterpieces.
Decent game if it works 2 out of 5
This is an action/rpg game that has been around for awhile. I understand that Gothic 2 is widely regarded as a classic, and that Gothic 3 has more bugs than Virginia in August. Unfortunately I was unable to get Gothic 1 or 2 to work on my computer. I understand that these games were originally built to be used with Win 95/98 OS, but this repackaging says it should work with Win 2000/XP. I lost interest in trying to get those games up and running, so I'll just mention Gothic 3. It works fairly well; however there is very long loading times and the gameplay tends to stutter often on my system. I am running Win XP service pack 3 with a AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual core 3800+(2.00 GHz), 2 Gig RAM, and a GeForce 8600GT card. I am sure these specs are well above the requirements for this game as it is older. There seems to be alot to like in Gothic 3 if it would only run properly. I tried getting a patch and found some community patches that didn't really help me. I have also played Risen, which is by the same company and seems to be a spiritual successor to Gothic and is quite outstanding, graphics are great and it runs well. In short, proceed with caution if considering a purchase. I'm not too unhappy as the game only cost me a few bucks on Amazon and I didn't have high expectations anyway. I would recommend going with Risen which is somewhat of a new game made by the same company with many of the same conventions as Gothic.
